BBC loses Grand National and all racing to Channel 4

The BBC has lost its live television rights for the Grand National and all other racing to Channel 4.

Channel 4's new deal runs from 2013 to 2016 and is for the the entire UK horseracing terrestrial rights.

It has been agreed with the Racecourse Media Group (RMG), in association with Jockey Club Racecourses, Ascot Racecourse and other independent racecourses.

It means Channel 4 will now exclusively broadcast all the biggest dates from the calendar including:
> Aintree's three-day John Smith's Grand National meeting,
> the Investec Derby Festival from Epsom Downs,
> Royal Ascot,
> the QIPCO British Champions Day.

They are added to long-established coverage of Cheltenham Festival, Newbury, York, Chester, Glorious Goodwood racecourses and the Flat Season QIPCO British Champions Series.

Jay Hunt, Channel 4's chief creative officer, said: "We are delighted Channel 4 is to become the sole destination for British horseracing after securing such iconic events as Royal Ascot, the John Smith's Grand National and the Investec Derby.

"These will sit alongside our established coverage of The Cheltenham Festival and major flat meetings such as Glorious Goodwood and the Ebor Festival and means we can extend our distinctive approach to all the crown jewels of the sport."

Jamie Aitchison, Channel 4's sports editor, said: "I am delighted Channel 4's 28-year association with racing has now arrived at the point where the industry has demonstrated such confidence in our ability to showcase its complete portfolio.

"This is an opportunity for us to work together to grow the sport, painting the full picture of both the flat and jumps seasons to attract new viewers whilst rewarding those loyal viewers we value so highly. Channel 4 fully understands the heritage and cultural importance of British racing, but also the sport's thirst for a bright future, and we relish the challenge ahead."

The BBC is facing considerable budget cutbacks, but claims it put in as competitive a bid as it could to retain the rights.

BBC director of sport Barbara Slater said: "We are of course disappointed that we have lost the rights, but we are pleased that all the races in the contract remain free to air."

Steve Rider confirmed as part of ITV 4's BTCC coverage

ITV Sport has confirmed that Steve Rider will continue to present its coverage of the British Touring Car Championship in 2012 - despite his new role with Sky Sports F1.

Rider is hosting a series of Legends programmes for the new Sky service, but there will be no clash with his BTCC work for ITV 4 which will again also feature Louise Goodman.

Both will front ITV4’s live Sunday broadcasts from all ten of the BTCC’s race events in 2012, running from around 11am to 6pm.

Toby Moody will join former champion and expert pundit Tim Harvey in the commentary box. Moody takes over from Ben Edwards who's departed for the BBC's F1 coverage.

Rider commented: “It’s terrific that ITV remains a genuine alternative for people looking beyond Formula 1 for another form of highly professional and exciting motor sport in Britain. The network’s coverage of the BTCC is something of a perfect marriage between high street motoring and the high octane end of motor sport. The championship always comes with a great noise and fury and this will likely be even more so the case under the new regulations.”

Tony Pastor, head of production for ITV Sport, said: “Steve, Louise, Toby and Tim surely make for one of TV’s most popular and professional presenting teams of any sport. That will prove invaluable in our coverage of the BTCC in 2012 bearing in mind that our live race day broadcasts contain close to seven hours of non-stop action for viewers.”

Alistair Griffin's Just Drive revealed as new Sky Sports F1 theme

Sky Sports has confirmed that Alistair Griffin's Just Drive will be the theme music for its Formula One coverage.

Originally released last year by the former BBC Fame Academy contestant, the track has been re-recorded for Sky to include the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra in addition to young singers from the Berkshire-based Rodolfus Choir.

It will be used as the channel's soundtrack for a 43-second opening sequence which features footage of 32 different Grands Prix from between 1950 and 2011.

Sky Sports F1 producer Martin Turner said: "The archived footage of Formula 1 is the most evocative of any sport. There have only ever been 32 World Champions and every one of them, a global sporting icon. Pictures of these heroes are some of the most compelling images in sporting history and we wanted to honour that history in our opening titles.

"The track adds to that sense of history and drama. The first time I heard Just Drive, I loved it and every time you hear it you love it more and more. It fits for both the modern and historic context of Formula 1 and I'm sure our viewers will like it."

Singer-songwriter Alistair added: "F1 was the inspiration behind Just Drive and I always hoped it would strike a chord with fans of motorsport. To have Sky Sports F1 take Just Drive as its theme tune is absolutely amazing. There is a history of anthemic songs associated with F1 and I would love for Just Drive to become one of those songs."

The new Sky Sports F1 channel launches on Friday (March 9) at 8pm.
